Seamus Darby
The Man who Scored the GAA's Most infamous
Goal
It is the most famous and talked about goal in the entire history
of Gaelic football. 1982 all Ireland final, two minutes to go
and Kerry is ahead. Seamus Darby comes on for Offaly and scores
what was to be the most talked about goal of all time. Kerry were
prevented form winning the 5-in-a row all Ireland titles and history
was written.
In this wonderful historic interview in 1998 Seamus Darby talks
exclusively to Weeshie on terrace talk and recants in fascinating
detail the scoring of this goal an how it had such and effect
on his life of afterwards. This lengthy interview will most definately
go down as a terrace
talk classic.
The fact taht this goal by Seamus Darby prevented kerry from winning
5-in-a-row all Ireland titles turned the Offally man into one
of the G.A.A's historic figures. In fact Seamus admits in this
wonderful interview that it was in fact the one and only kick
he got in that memorable win for his side Offally.
The big question still being debated decades later is, did Seamus
first push his marker Tommy Doyle as the ball dropped between
them? It is one of the most controversial debates in the long
history of the association. Seamus Darby now lives in London and
this classic and now hostorical interview, conducted from his
home, captures for posterity what happened that wet September
day in 1982.
