Justin
McCarthy
The Hurling Man
Justin was one of the most stylish hurlers of his generation.
He won an all Ireland medal in 1966 but three years later his
career was cruelly cut short by injuries he recieved in a traffic
accident. He turned to coaching
and coached his native cork.
In the mid seventies before being sacked in highly controversial
circumstances, a man of strong individual views, he then did what
in Cork terms was the unthinkable. He went coaching in Clare taking
the county to a hat trick of national league titles
and two Munster finals. He returned to Cork in the mid seventies
and coached Cork to win the centenary all Ireland in 1984.
Justin's love for hurling has brought him to many parts of Ireland
and this year, 2002, he set waterford alight as he guided them
to the Munster title.
Earlier the same year with Sunday Tribune journalist the talented
Kieran Shannon, Justin's book "Hooked" was launched.
A captivating read it captures the passionate love affair Justin
has with hurling.
He travelled to Kerry to join Weeshie on Terrace Talk and his
open honest and forthright approach to the interview makes it
yet another not to be missed Terrace Talk. Justin McCarthy is
without doubt one of hurlings greatest ambassadors. A credit to
the game.
