Dan Keating
Legendary Kerry Footballer
One of the most historic Terrace Talks of all was Weeshie's interview with the wonderful 102 year old Dan Keating from Ballygambon, Castlemaine Co. Kerry. Dan recalls vividly details from his life such as his imprisonment during the troubles, and remembers every Kerry footballer from Dick Fitzgerald 1910 to Maurice Fitzgerald 2000. This legendary interview is another priceless jewel in the Terrace Talk story.

His first All-Ireland in 1919 might have been yesterday, it's so vivid in Dan's memory. The Friday before that game, he left his home in the townland of Lisnanaul, Castlemaine, Co.Kerry and walked eight miles to Tralee. He traveled by ghost train to Dublin, paying his fare of 3s-4d (half price, as he looked younger than his years!).

He speaks in this interview of his year in jail during the troubled times. Here, he met the famous Lander Brothers and the legendary John Joe Sheehy, the former Kerry captain. He says the greatest football side of all was the Kerry side of 1929 - 32. The present side "wouldn't keep the ball kicked out to them", he maintains. In 1977, he retired after spending over 50 years as a barman in the Comet on the Sowards Road.

He still travels to Dublin on his own by train, and to listen to Dan Keating, this fascinating 100 year old man of Kerry is, without doubt, an enriching experience. Indeed, it is a Terrace Talk treasure.
